One of the surest prides of the west coast, Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) is barely eleven miles from our Oxnard, CA hotel. The base came into prominence in 1941 shortly after America’s entry in World War II as an Advance Base Depot and assignment and training facility for the now world-famous Seabees. The Seabees, a play on the unit code CB, belonged to the US Navy’s Construction Battalions, specializing in building bases, airstrips, and roadways. So critical to the original mission of the Naval Base were the Seabees that they were later honored with the onsite Seabee Museum.

Today, this Naval Base in California has greatly expanded its role in the modern US military structure, becoming a central tenant is the Department of Defense and expanding into three separate facilities. Its non-encroached coastal location makes it a key player in sub surface weapon systems, and in fact the San Nicolas Island post of the NBVC contains and development and training facility established by the Missile Defense Agency. In all, NBVC averages over 17,000 onsite personnel, military and civilian.

While the majority of the facility is off-limits to visitors, the onsite Seabee Museum is open to both pre-arranged groups and walk-ins.
